Super DLT (Super Digital Linear Tape)

SDLT is an evolution of DLT backups originally developed by Quantum. This backup format was designed to meet the growing needs for storage capacity and performance.

A key feature of SDLT lies in its head management using a laser beam called LGMR (Laser Guided Magnetic Recording). Unlike traditional DLT backups, SDLT utilizes both sides of the tape to store data, tracking information, and positioning optically. It is this side that is exploited by the laser beam to ensure increased precision in head positioning.

By utilizing the laser, SDLT offers greater precision in the positioning of the read/write heads, resulting in significant improvements in read and write performance. Additionally, this technology allows for increased storage capacity of SDLT cartridges.

SDLT and DLT cartridges have identical dimensions, measuring 105.7 mm in width x 105.4 mm in length x 25.4 mm in height. The tape length can vary from 557 to 630 meters, while the tape width remains the same for all formats at 12.7 mm.

In summary, Super DLT (SDLT) is an evolution of DLT backups, providing improved head management through the use of a laser beam. This technology enables greater head positioning precision and increased storage capacity. SDLT cartridges share the same dimensions as DLT cartridges, with variable tape lengths but a constant tape width.

Our company has the skills and resources necessary to ensure data recovery from SDLT media. With our expertise in data recovery and specialized equipment, we are able to offer reliable and efficient data recovery services for SDLT cartridges.

Common failures of SDLT tapes

The most common situations we handle in the laboratory.

Mechanical

Magnetic tape degradation

The magnetic oxide of the SDLT tape deteriorates over time. The optical side used by the LGMR laser can also lose readability, compromising the positioning of the heads.

Hardware

SDLT drive failure

Failure of the LGMR laser beam, worn or misaligned heads. SDLT drives are rare and their laser guidance mechanism is particularly sensitive.

Physical

Tape jam or cartridge breakage

The tape (up to 630 metres) jams or breaks in the mechanism. A forced ejection or abrupt stop of the drive are the most common causes.

Software

Obsolete backup format

The backup software used at the time is no longer available or incompatible. Data extraction requires knowledge of specific SDLT formats.

Human

Accidental overwrite

An SDLT cartridge accidentally reused during a backup rotation. Recovery is possible if the tape has not been completely overwritten.

Environment

Environmental damage

Prolonged exposure to heat, humidity or magnetic fields. The optical side of the SDLT is particularly vulnerable to dust and scratches.

Frequently asked questions

Our specialists answer the most common questions.

Do you recover SDLT tapes even without the drive?

Yes. Our laboratory has SDLT drives covering all generations. You only need to send us the tape.

Is the diagnostic free?

Yes. The diagnostic analysis is free and delivered in less than 3 hours upon receipt of your tape. A detailed quote is provided to you before any intervention.

What is the difference between DLT and SDLT?

SDLT (Super DLT) is the high-capacity evolution of DLT, developed by Quantum. It offers native capacities ranging from 110 GB (SDLT 220) to 300 GB (SDLT 600), compared to a maximum of 40 GB for DLT-IV.
