Software Failure? Hardware Failure?

Software Failure? Hardware Failure?

One day, your hard drive stops working.

Not being a computer scientist by trade, you rush to said computer expert to find out what's happening to your hard drive. They examine the precious storage of your years of photography, music, documents, and other photos. The verdict is final: your hard drive has failed.

It is then that you turn to a data recovery company - such as SOS Data Recovery - which informs you of the two possible types of failure: software or hardware.

Not having become a computer scientist in the meantime, you remain silent, not knowing what it's all about.

Here are some explanations of these two types of failures.

We speak of software failure for problems such as formatting - total erasure of all the contents of the hard drive, which is like being "reset" - or the pure and simple manual deletion of the data contained. In this case, it may be possible to recover the data contained on the hard drive, as it may still be physically present on the sectors of the hard drive.

Hardware failure, on the other hand, usually presents itself to you with noises - clicking sounds coming from the hard drive, repeated on/off noises, blue screens under Windows - but it can come from different causes.

First of all, it may be a problem of defectiveness at the level of the sectors of the hard drive - which are the part where the information will be physically written - a problem at the level of the read heads - which will read the information on the platters of the hard drive - or even the surface of the hard drive which is deteriorated - following a problem of a read head rubbing the surface, or an external element scratching the surface of the hard drive. Problems with the components of the electronic board of the hard drive - damaged PCB, or defective component - are also to be classified in the category of hardware failures.

Knowing all this, whether it's a hardware failure or a software failure, you are now able to understand what it's all about.
