Software Failure? Hardware Failure?

One day, your hard drive stops working.

Not being a computer scientist by trade, you rush to said computer expert to find out what's happening to your hard drive. They examine the precious storage of your years of photography, music, documents, and other photos. The verdict is final: your hard drive has failed.

Here are some explanations of these two types of failures.

We speak of software failure for problems such as formatting - total erasure of all the contents of the hard drive, which is like being "reset" - or the pure and simple manual deletion of the data contained. Problems with the components of the electronic board of the hard drive - damaged PCB, or defective component - are also to be classified in the category of hardware failures.
